I Wonder Why

Twenty-three dead cats spread
with matted fur, malnutrition
in the foreclosed house of a louse
like prisoners of war
five still alive which means
close to thirty dwelled in hell
the toxic fumes a fire hazard
among the hoarder’s trash stashed
for heaven only knows how long
these inhumane conditions existed.

Horrific and well portrayed too. One just wonders why some people never take responsibility for the way they live and their cruelty towards other living beings.

You vividly depicted a scene from the news, evoking emotion and thought with far fewer lines than many journalists would have spun. Nicely done, Laurie.

Animal hoarding is such a complicated issue. The hoarders actually can't see the harm they are doing to the animals that is so apparent to everyone else. It's so sad.

This is meant as a compliment, Laurie: This is simply horrendous!!! Terrible! Turns my stomach... Even more so since it was completely unexpected! In other words a brilliant write, but still so very terrible!

What an awful situation! Little Basil came from a home where there were 51 toy fox terriers being hoarded. The dogs just kept reproducing. None of the dogs died, but it was good that the authorities stepped in. (and I am thankful for my puppy)

Ewww! Reading this made my skin crawl! Very descriptive, indeed!

Oh this is so horrendous. It is one thing to think of an adult human living like this if he chooses, but to inflict it on helpless animals is appalling. The poor things.

Ugh, I heard about this. What's wrong with the humans?

Well done poem, though. Good balance of rage and "why?"

My heart aches for them, Laurie. <3

I too wonder what creates this mindset~ I saw a woman's house in a friend's neighborhood, that was horrific, like this....but she wasn't harming animals. It is sad....
No words to describe harming kitties!
You did great job of throwing the wonder to the curb and make us look at why...
